America prime property
for overseas investors

Is America replacing China as the new frontier for investment?
The Chinese think so.

According to a recent roundtable hosted by the Asia Society, there has been an “investment surge in U.S. high tech. As Chinese outbound investment shifts from natural resources into more advanced, innovation-intensive industries, a rapidly increasing share is going into U.S. IT, clean tech, biotech, advanced transportation and more.”

Recognizing the economic shift taking place, U.S. Congressman Scott Peters, along with San Diego County Supervisor Dave Roberts, is working with the Asian Heritage Society in inviting investors from China and other Asian countries to familiarize themselves with opportunities in the San Diego region by attending a conference along with California business and industry leaders called “Make It In America,” whose main purpose is to promote San Diego and environs as a hub of innovation and prime for a multitude of investment opportunity.

The four-day conference will take place Wednesday, Nov. 18, to Saturday, Nov. 22, at the California Center for the Arts in Escondido, drawing attendance from Riverside and Orange counties as well as San Diego. Some 70 CEOs and heads of a variety of businesses form China, Vietnam, Taiwan and Thailand are expected to attend.

San Diego has been making sounds as ground zero for investment opportunities in high tech, bio tech and all things tech for some time – but most of those sounds have been rippling rather than booming. Take Ben Stein. Well, most folks would prefer not to, but this erstwhile comedian, actor, TV personality and columnist awhile back called San Diego “the next Hong Kong” in a speech before the South County Economic Development Council. Citing the proximity of affordable labor at our border and the maquiladora manufacturing and assembly facilities employing them, he remarked, “You have something here which is approaching the miraculous…Right across the border, very close to here, you have an enormous supply of hardworking, skilled, disciplined, eager workers. It’s as if you guys have miraculously brought China right next door to you.”

Others have long recognized other benefits, including

Easy access to a consumer base of  942  million people – North, South and Latin America -- with higher disposable incomes than most parts of the world. Compare this to China’s one billion plus consumers, whose economic base is nowhere near this market.
A rapidly emerging consumer market of under 30 while populations in Asia are aging in reverse and even declining in China because of the one child policy
A sound infrastructure compared to challenged ones in places like India and Vietnam
Generally settled conditions compared to crippling air pollution in China, political turmoil in Thailand and a landscape in the Philippines still trying to recover from last year’s devastating typhoon

Also, San Diego is considered one of the top twenty innovative centers in the U.S. with its high rate of patent approval – definitely a plus for investors.

While outsourcing to other countries in the last two decades has enriched the heads of massive corporations, companies are recognizing that the grass is not necessarily greener, according to economist James Moreland. Many are returning to America or closing down overseas divisions.

Then there’s something else to consider – the track record of offshore production, including shabbily-made and, in some cases, even dangerous products.

Given the choice between a product made in the U.S. and an identical one made abroad, 78 percent of Americans would rather buy the American product, according to a survey by the Consumer Reports National Research Center.

Rest assured, the Chinese know that.
